Entre Las Piernas

The second Nucleus Films release is the 1999 film BETWEEN YOUR LEGS, a smart and stylish erotic thriller directed by Manuel Gómez Pereira (LOVE CAN SERIOUSLY DAMAGE YOUR HEALTH, 1996) and starring Pedro Almodovar regular, Victoria Abril (HIGH HEELS, 1991, TIE ME UP! TIE ME DOWN!, 1990) and the Stacy Keach- like Javier Bardem (THE SEA INSIDE, COLLATERAL, 2004).

The reason for the film’s comparison to Hitchcock’s work is clear from the onset; the Saul Bass-inspired opening credits, a Bernard Herrmann-esque score (by Bernard Bonezzi) and, of course, references to VERTIGO, (1958). Based on Joaquin Oristrell's novel "Entre las piernas", the story concerns two rehabilitation-seeking sex addicts (Abril and Bardem) whose adulterous relationship leads them into a dark world of blackmail and murder.

Miranda (Victoria Abril) works for a nightly radio talk show, where callers mainly discuss sexual problems, and regularly picks up men whilst walking her dog. Javier is a handsome and successful scriptwriter addicted to telephone-sex. After meeting at a group therapy session for similarly afflicted individuals, they begin a steamy adulterous relationship. Unknown to Miranda and Javier, one of their illicit encounters, in an abandoned car in an underground car park, inextricably links them to a murder being investigated by Miranda's policeman husband, Félix (Carmelo Gómez). To make matters even worse, Javier’s telephone-sex sessions have been recorded, and tapes distributed around Madrid. He has unwittingly become something of a celebrity, but not for his scriptwriting abilities.

An erotic tale of compulsive obsession, revenge and murder, Pereira's stunningly shot and brilliantly performed award-winning BETWEEN YOUR LEGS is packed with thrilling narrative twists and turns guaranteed to keep viewers guessing until the final shocking revelation. Nobody in Pereira's world remains untainted by the atmosphere of betrayal, deceit, suicide, and eventually, murder; from the taxi driver, who contracts AIDS from having unprotected sex with one of his ‘rides’, to the police officers with cheating wives, Pereira depicts a sleazy world of sex, lies and audiotape.
